North Dakota began automobile registration and state-issued plates in 1911, and this plate design remained unchanged until 1948. Plates with the letter "F" were issued to Ford cars and trucks in 1925-26, while all other vehicle makes received numbers only. "PEACE GARDEN STATE", used since 1956, promotes the International Peace Garden located on the U.S.-Canadian border. The current issue of plates began in 2015.
